Memphis is the largest city in the state of Tennessee and a major cultural center for the Southeastern United States, with a metropolitan population of over one million. Memphis International Airport is a major “hub” airport offering 110 direct flights daily. Memphis is also home to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, AutoZone, Thomas and Betts, Smith and Nephew, Union Planters and the FedEx World Headquarters. Last year alone 24 major companies announced relocations to Memphis, and 170 existing businesses announced expansions in 2004. These 194 major projects combined to occupy more than 9.84 million square feet of industrial, retail and office space and created 6,050 new jobs. In 2006 the Memphis MSA (metropolitan statistical area) was ranked 7th in the nation for top Metro Areas for new and expanded facilities in the U.S. by Expansion Management magazine.
